Lightfast on an iPad: a triadic harmony of ultramarine blue, vermilion and hansa yellow on a wheel of 172 watercolors

What it does

Most color wheels are made of screen colors that no paint can match. Lightfast builds its wheel from 172 watercolors measured by Bruce MacEvoy, so every point on it is a paint you can actually buy. Drag the dots to a harmony and it names the pigments.

Load a photo and Lightfast turns it into a numbered paint-by-numbers map, then writes a mixing recipe for every color in it, using only the paints in your box. It works for watercolor and oil.

  • A wheel of real pigments, with traditional and measured layouts
  • Every classic harmony, plus famous palettes placed on the wheel
  • Photo to numbered map, with a recipe for each color
  • Mixing charts, value studies and print at canvas size
  • Runs in the browser, no account needed
